Add a few scoops of buttercream filling and smooth it down until it’s about ¼ inch. Position the next layer of cake on top, adhering the curved pieces of the heart with buttercream just like you did with the bottom cake layer. This design will work in all sorts of color palettes, but with Valentine’s Day around the corner I could not stop imagining an all-pink color palette.

And ever since I discovered this hack for making heart-shaped cakes out of round cake layers, I have been making more and more with beautiful vintage piping. You never need a novelty cake pan for this design (unless you really want one). I’m working with two 8-inch cake layers made with my one-bowl chocolate cake recipe for this tutorial, and I’ll show you how I turn them into heart-shaped layers. And speaking of buttercream, you can use whatever kind you prefer to frost and pipe cakes with. I am using 3 batches of my favorite vanilla buttercream recipe. So this little trick makes it super easy to make a heart shaped cake without any special baking pans.
Easy Heart Cake Shaped Recipe
Squeeze the bag as you move your hand slightly up and down to create the ruffle texture as you pipe a semicircle. Release pressure on the bag once you’ve ended the ruffle where you desire. For this particular design, I made a homemade cherry chip cake (this recipe makes three 6" layers). You can use any flavor of cake you'd like, or even a boxed cake mix (might I recommend a few upgrades to make you cake mix taste nearly homemade?) for this tutorial.
I used a mix of AmeriColor Deep Pink and Fuchsia to get three different shades of pink for this beauty. And I kept things simple-ish by only using 3 piping tips for all the vintage piping pictured (okay, four piping tips if you count the writing on top). Heart shaped cupcakes aren’t hard to make in a normal cupcake tin! Start by preheating the oven and mixing up your cake batter. Then place cupcake liners inside a cupcake tin and add the batter to them. Only fill the cups halfway (which may means this makes more cupcakes than you are used to).

It’s a great way to celebrate and everyone loves the surprise inside, since you literally can’t see it until you cut a slice. Alternately, you could put the cupcakes in a heart shape before frosting and push them as close together as possible. Then spread frosting across all the cupcakes, covering the gaps between the cupcakes with frosting as well.

Start by making the batter for the inside cake, and then baking it in a loaf pan following the package directions. Let it cool completely and then slice it into 1-inch pieces. You can use a 2-inch heart-shaped cookie cutter or make one out of plastic soda bottle. Immediate place a foil template on top of cupcake, laying it gently over the frosting, then pour on sprinkles. It’s best to do this on a cookie sheet as the extra sprinkles will spill off over the edges of the foil. Pull up the template and wipe it off as needed to use on the next cupcake.

Enveloped in rich chocolate, this cake is adorned with an “I love you” message atop its velvety surface, which you can customize with a fondant message of your choice. I used Sprinkle Pop Vintage Rose Gold sprinkles for this cake, which matched the buttercream color scheme perfectly. Add a layer of filling and then position the next layer of cake on top, adhering the curved pieces of the heart with buttercream like you did in the previous step. Finally, connect each ruffle garland with a simple piped heart using Wilton Tip 32. I basically piped two overlapping shells to create these little heart shapes. I ended up using a paring knife to carve out a more emphasized “v” shape at the top of the cake and crumb coating over that.
Ok, this method’s a bit of a cheat because the cake isn’t actually shaped like a heart, but the cute sprinkle decoration on top is. The method is very easy, but it will take a few minutes to decorate an entire batch of cupcakes. Ideal for Valentine’s Day, you can decorate your heart cake with delicious flowers like roses, daisies, and leaves to create a romantic appearance. The black forest cake in a heart-shaped design is the epitome of luxury.
Since her love for cooking never faded, in 2021 she finally decided to share her recipes with the world. Laura turned her hobby into a career and loves every moment of it. Now she writes about common mistakes in the kitchen and how to avoid them, about adding twists to traditional meals, etc.
Cooking, baking, developing recipes and kitchen tips is my passion. I love sharing my dishes and connecting with people through the food that I create. To pipe a shell border, place the tip of the bag just above the cake. Squeeze the bag, allowing the frosting to fan out as it reaches the cake.
Refrigerate the frosted cake for at least 20 minutes while you prepare the rest of the buttercream. Starting at one of the dots, place the tip of your piping bag against the cake and squeeze to attach the frosting. Continue squeezing, letting the the frosting hang and droop into place before attaching it to the next dot. Once the combined heart inside cake has cooled completely, you can spread the frosting over the outside and add decorations. We’ve made it for Valentine’s, Mother’s Day and birthday parties.
Divide the rest of the buttercream evenly between 3 bowls. Add a few drops of AmeriColor Chili Pepper and a few drops of Super Red to the first bowl and mix it until you get a nice deep shade of red. Scoop a few Tablespoons of the dark red buttercream into the second bowl and mix it in to create a mid-toned pink.
Place the cake in the refrigerator to chill until the frosting forms a crust (about 10 minutes). If you plan to make a different size cake, check out my post on estimating frosting for more information. Baker & recipe developer on a mission to make baking EASY, affordable, and delicious.
